What Does 20/20 Vision Actually Mean?

20/20 Vision

At Eye Site in Katy and Memorial, TX, our team provides eye exams to monitor your vision and provide prompt treatment for any conditions and diseases. We also offer visual acuity tests to determine if you have 20/20 vision. To learn more about 20/20 vision and the importance of vision exams, keep reading below!

Understanding 20/20 Vision

20/20 vision is considered normal vision. A Snellen chart is used to measure your visual acuity and the letters on the char decrease in size as your eyes move down. The first number on the chart refers to how far away the patient is, while the second number shows how well you can see from 20 feet away. Sometimes a digital chart may be utilized due to space. While it’s possible to have 20/20 vision, most people with 20/20 vision do not require glasses or contact lenses.

The Importance of Vision Exams

It's always recommended to have an annual eye exam. The prescription for your vision can change frequently, so a comprehensive eye exam can help ensure that you have the correct treatment and are seeing clearly. Our optometrists will also check for any signs of eye diseases or conditions, such as like glaucoma, macular degeneration, or astigmatism. Along with that, a color blind test, depth portion test, and tonometry may also be performed. Since many eye conditions don’t display symptoms in the initial stages, an exam can help identify any conditions.
