Glaucoma

Glaucoma

Many people don't think a lot about seeing an optometrist if they haven't noticed problems with their vision, and even those who have worn corrective lenses for years will trudge through with the same pair of glasses if they believe their prescription has evened out. But going to an eye doctor is about more than keeping your vision at 20/20 or something close to it. An eye exam is your first line of defense against sight robbing eye conditions, including Glaucoma. At Eyesite Texas in Katy & Houston, we look closely for signs of this condition and others during every comprehensive exam to assure you can begin treatment if you do have this disease.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye condition that damages the optic nerve and is usually linked to internal pressure within the eye. Vision damage from glaucoma is to peripheral vision but happens so gradually that it has usually been present for quite a while before it becomes noticeable to a patient. However, an eye exam reveals it rather quickly. It is most common in those over 40, those who are diabetic, and who already have poor vision. Some ethnic groups also seem more predisposed to the condition. With glaucoma, the edges of vision are blacked out and the circle of central vision gradually becomes smaller and smaller. While there is no cure for glaucoma, our aim at Eyesite Texas in Katy & Houston is to slow that progression to allow you to keep as much of your vision as possible for as long as possible.

Treatment Options for Glaucoma

There are several options for treatment for glaucoma, that we at Eyesite Texas can discuss with you. Some of these include

  • Eye drops reduce fluid formation in the eye and reduce eye pressure on the optic nerve.
  • Several types of laser surgeries are designed to reduce the build-up of fluid and allow for better drainage, and less pressure.
  • Trabeculectomy is a type of microsurgery sometimes performed that implants a drainage tube to ease eye pressure.

Regardless of the type of treatment you choose, we understand that living with glaucoma is traumatic, and we will stay on your side every step of the way. If it's been a while since you've been to an eye doctor, contact Eyesite Texas in Katy, Texas at 281-644-2010 or Houston's Memorial neighborhood at 713-984-9144 to schedule an appointment.
