Signs of Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration is a disease of the eye that affects the retina. It is a very common condition and is the most common cause of vision loss in those who are 50 years and older. Two types of macular degeneration can affect your eyes, dry and wet. Dry Macular Degeneration
In the case of dry macular degeneration, the symptoms usually develop slowly over time and without causing any pain. Some signs are:
- Distortions in vision i.e. straight lines seem wavy
- A reduction in central vision in either one or both eyes
- Requiring more light when trying to do close work or reading
- Difficulty adjusting to low lighting
- Printed word blurriness
- Bright colors no longer seem so bright
- Trouble identifying faces
- Developing a spot within your line of vision
Wet Macular Degeneration
The symptoms of wet and dry macular degeneration are the same. However, with wet macular degeneration, the symptoms often appear suddenly and worsen very rapidly. This means the need for quick action is even greater. Some treatments are available for both types of macular degeneration to slow the progression but at this time there is no cure.
