Vision therapy is a term used by optometrists to define the process of developing or improving visual skills and abilities. It also works to improve visual comfort and efficiency. It can help individuals to change the way their brains process or interpret visual information. This type of program involves the use of supervised in-office and at-home reinforcement exercises. These are conducted over a period of weeks or months, based on the individual's needs In addition, you may need to use other tools such as lenses called training glasses, prisms, patches, filters, and electronic targets, as well as specific exercises, at home to improve visual efficiency.

There are three types of vision therapy commonly used:

Orthopedic vision therapy is a set of eye exercises conducted to improve binocular function. These are often done for children. These exercises are taught in the office. Then, the patient is able to perform them at home.

Behavioral and perceptual vision therapy is a second form. Here, eye exercises are used to improve visual processing and overall visual perception.

Preventive vision therapy is often used as well. This type of therapy is designed to correct or prevent myopia, which is more commonly known as nearsightedness.

What Are the Benefits of Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy can benefit many people. It can improve a wide range of vision problems including amblyopia, called lazy eye, as well as strabismus, in which the eye is not positioned properly. In many cases, it can improve other binocular vision problems such as subtle eye alignment problems causing eye strain. Eye movement disorders can also see improvement with this treatment. Those who have focusing disorders, called accommodative concerns, may see improvement as well. In all situations where visual focus is limited, it may be possible for vision therapy to improve efficiency and effectiveness of vision.

This can improve a person's ability to see well. While this condition is not meant to be a self-help program, it can be very effective with an optometrist or ophthalmologist working alongside a patient's at-home treatment.

Is Vision Therapy Covered By Insurance?

In many cases, vision therapy is covered by insurance. However, you will need to speak to your insurance provider first to determine if this is the case. Pre-test assessment and examination assessments are the first step. Patient education is generally a service provided by the eye doctor without cost to the patient if the doctor believes vision therapy can be beneficial. Treatment then begins and costs will range widely.
