If you've ever been sunburned, then you know just how damaging sun exposure can be to your skin. But did you know that your eyes can be just as sensitive (if not more sensitive) to the sun? Specifically, the sun emits UVA and UVB rays that can be harmful to your eyes and vision, especially if exposed in large doses. Exposing your eyes to the sun's rays can make you more likely to develop any number of eye conditions and diseases over time, including corneal sunburn (photokeratitis), which can be very uncomfortable and even lead to temporary vision loss.
Some other eye conditions and problems that could result from sun exposure include:
If you value your eye and vision health, there are some steps you should begin taking to protect your vision (if you're not doing so already), especially in preparation for outdoor activities this summer.
Perhaps the easiest and most effective way to protect your eyes from the sun's UVA and UVB rays is to simply wear sunglasses when you're outdoors. Specifically, grab a pair of sunglasses that is rated to block out at least 99% of UV rays, as these will provide you with the best protection. If you don't have a pair of quality sunglasses or if you're in need of a new prescription pair, our team at Eye Site can help. We offer a wide range of sunglass frames to choose from, including:
Furthermore, we carry a large selection of styles and we're constantly adding new options to our inventory, so you can keep up-to-date with the latest trends. We even carry designer sunglasses from your favorites like Coach, Prada, Armani Exchange and more!
In addition to having a quality pair of sunglasses with lenses that suit your prescription, you may also want to consider having polarized lenses added to your sunglasses. These will provide additional protection against glare, which is ideal for those who like to spend time on the water during the summer months. We offer a number of different lens color options that can help to combat glare, reduce eye strain, and even provide better quality lighting or contrast. If you're not sure which type of sunglass lenses are best for your needs, simply speak to one of our experienced staff members and they'd be happy to help you!
For the highest level of eye protection, you should wear sunglasses every time you're outdoors during daylight hours—even if it's a cloudy or overcast day. In addition to wearing sunglasses or considering polarized lenses, you may also consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat to provide added protection not only to your eyes, but around the scalp and face as well.
Whether you're in need of an updated eye and vision exam or are looking for help in choosing the sunglasses that are right for you, our Katy optometry team is here to help. Contact Eye Site today to set up your appointment and find out more about how our sunglasses can help you protect your eyes and vision this summer.
