Why are eye exams important?

Eye exams are important because they help test for common eye diseases and eye health problems along with visual acuity. Common eye diseases that can be detected during a comprehensive eye exam include age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, lazy eyes, and crossed-eyes. Common refractive errors include nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia, and astigmatisms. Without regular eye examinations, these conditions and refractive errors can result in difficulty seeing and permanent vision loss.

How often should I get an eye exam?

Children should receive an initial eye exam at six months and another around their third birthday. They will also need an eye exam before they begin school and before the start of every school year.

Adults with no history of vision problems should receive a comprehensive eye exam every two years to check for common eye diseases and any changes in visual acuity. Adults who wear glasses or contacts or have a family history of eye health problems should receive an eye exam every year. If you have an eye disease, like AMD, diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma, you may need more frequent exams.

How long do eye examinations typically take?

Eye examinations typically take about an hour. If you are getting a dilated eye exam, contact lens fitting or additional services during your exam, you should plan for the examination to take longer. When you call to schedule your appointment, we can give you a time estimation for your eye exam.

What should I expect during my eye examination appointment?

If this is your first time visiting our office, we will hand you some form to fill out while you wait, or you can choose to download the forms and fill them out at your convenience.

During your appointment, your eyes will be tested for glaucoma and other common eye diseases, and our eye doctor will ask you if you have any eye health concerns or chronic diseases that may affect your vision.

Our optometrist will then test your eye function and movement. You will be tested for depth perception and color blindness. Then, you will be given a visual acuity test via a Snellen eye chart. If you do not see 20/20, our eye doctor will determine an eyeglasses prescription via a phoropter, and you will be given an eyeglasses prescription that you can fill at our optical shop.

Will my insurance cover my eye exam in Katy or Houston?

Here at EyeSite in Katy and Houston, Texas, we accept a variety of vision insurance providers. To determine if we accept your insurance provider, please call us for confirmation.

Will I receive a contact lens fitting as part of the eye exam?

Contact lens fittings are not typically part of a basic or comprehensive eye exam. If you would like a prescription for contacts, please let us know when you schedule your appointment.

How much does an eye exam cost?

The out-of-pocket costs for your eye exam will depend on the type of appointment, your insurance coverage and whether or not you choose to finance your visit. If you have concerns about the cost of your visit, we would be happy to answer your questions.
